What is an ammonite?
Ammonites were shelled cephalopods that have been extinct for around 66 million years. Although they belong to the same family as squid, octopus and cuttlefish, many thought ammonites were coiled-up snakes that had turned into stone. Our ammonite fossils provide valuable insight into the history of nautical creatures. What we know about today’s ocean is very limited, so it’s fantastic to have this look deep into the sea of the past. You can find out more information about what is an ammonite from our helpful guide.
