Agate is a fascinating gemstone thanks to its several forms and appearances. Moss agate, arguably the most famous variation, is a semi-transparent stone formed on several continents. The opaqueness of moss agate means every pattern within the stone is visible, making for a mesmerising and beautiful appearance that reveals the inner workings of a stone many believe has healing properties.

    What is agate?

Named after the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, who discovered the semi-precious gemstone by the Dirillo River in Sicily almost 2,500 years ago. It is formed from the combination of several microcrystalline quartz structures in the cavities of igneous rocks, such as volcanoes. Many hold agate in high regard due to its supposed metaphysical properties and spiritual significance. Agate is said to bring its owners good luck, balance and harmony. In Feng Shui, agate is also believed to assist fertility.
